Meet Ricky, the dynamic Director and our busiest instructor at The Band School. With a passion for music spanning drums, guitar, and keyboards, Ricky dedicates his days to teaching music lessons and coaching bands at Ilminster, Campion College and Gis Int.

Originally establishing The Band School in Wellington, Ricky later moved to Gisborne in late 2012, choosing the move to provide his children with the enriching environment of Tairāwhiti.

Ricky's musical journey includes collaborating with Grammy Award winner and Rock n Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Wanda Jackson, and recording over 20 albums. His highlights also feature contributions to the New Zealand Royal Ballet Tutu's on Tour with the Beatles and the Motion Picture soundtrack for Separation City.

Leading The Boomshack Band (drums), Set Waves (guitar), and The Oh So Lonelies (guitar), Ricky has made his mark. Under his direction, The Boomshack Band has graced over 100 shows, including performances at Cooly's Rocks On Festival in Tweed Heads, Australia, and wrap parties for Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit' and James Cameron’s The Avatar 2.

Ricky's impressive teaching resume includes instructing drums to an All Black (Alama Ieremia) and several TV stars, such as Jason Fa'afoi and Shavaughn Ruakere. His extensive musical collaborations include playing with prominent artists like Ladyhawke, Marlin Williams, Warren Maxwell, Sam Scott (Phoenix Foundation), Liam Finn, Connan Moccasin and many more.


Keren RickarD

Ukulele, Vocals, Keyboards

Diploma of Performing Arts, Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne, Level 3 certified ukulele teacher James Hill Ukulele Institute Canada, Jo Estill level 2 compulsory figures for voice.

For two decades, Keren has been a dedicated instructor in drama, ukulele, and singing, both in private settings and within school environments. As a co-founder of Gisborne Ukulele Underground and Young Ukers, she has played a pivotal role in fostering musical communities. Keren's talents extend beyond teaching, as she has successfully directed numerous Musical Theatre productions, showcasing her expertise in bringing performances to life.

Her involvement in the local music scene includes performing with the John McKill Jazz band and participating in the Te Tairawhiti Arts Festival. Keren's passion for music and performance goes beyond the stage; she sees them as powerful tools for expression, communication, and the development of essential life skills.

Meet Corban, a Gisborne native who discovered his love for playing the guitar during his intermediate years. At 24 years old, he has professionally showcased his guitar skills in various bands while concurrently developing a profound passion for audio production. Corban enjoys exploring diverse music genres, particularly those featuring the guitar. Excited about helping others elevate their guitar playing, he looks forward to assisting individuals in taking their musical skills to the next level.


Jarrod Seaton

Bass guitar and Beginner Drum tutor

Jarrod is the Head of the Music Department at Campion College and a skilled bass guitarist and enthusiastic drummer. Whether you’re interested in bass or beginner drum lessons, Jarrod is your go-to expert. He’s also knowledgeable about music gear and pedals, so feel free to ask him for advice on any equipment.


Willow Lawton

Intern beginner Piano Tutor

Willow is a talented piano player from GGHS, actively performing with the Band School Jazz Combo and the Tairawhiti Youth Concert Band. As a young musician with a passion for teaching, Willow offers beginner piano lessons at a special discounted rate. This provides a wonderful opportunity for whanau to receive high-quality instruction from a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher, all at an affordable price.
